So You Think You Can Dance – Week 5

The top six couples each perform two dances.

First up? Melissa and Ade make me dizzy with a disco routine. Lots of good stuff in it. Melissa’s body is amazing. Also, nice recovery when she falls on her booty at the end.

Kupono and Kayla take on a Mia Michaels’ piece about addiction. I thought it was beautiful though I’m STILL not getting the Kayla fascination.

Jason and Caitlin do… a foxtrot? Couldn’t find video for it. It was kinda boring.

Phillip and Jeanine do a Russian Folk Dance that looked like a really bad Epcot performance:

Randi and Evan do a Tabitha & Napoleon hip hop routine to Beyonce’s Halo.

Brandon and Janette rbing the house down with an absolutely perfect Argentine Tango… I love the tango. They were awesome.  I prefer the Bond version of Libertango, but this one will do too.

Melissa and Ade do their final dance together (the couples are broken up next week) and it’s a traditional waltz.

For Kupono and Kayla’s second piece, Nigel felt it lacked emotion…

Jason and Caitlin’s final number is a contemporary piece that left me underwhelmed.

Phillip and Jeanine do a jive… Phillip needs to go home.

Randi and Evan tackle a samba… they were kinda hard on Evan. But I’m pulling for them. I really am.

Brandon and Jeanette perform a jazz routine by Wade Robson… they were the couple of the night.

So, who’s going home? I think Phillip and maybe… Caitlin?

So You Think You Can Dance – Week 3

The top 16 take to the stage.

First up?

Karla and Jonathan take on a hip-hop routine that is so bad I can’t even find a clip of it on YouTube.

Asuka and Vitolio are next. They perform a jazz routine that seemed kind of simple. I didn’t care for it.

Melissa and Ade take on the rhumba. I love them. They’re talented and likable. The package before the performance would have you think they’d suck, but they were great.

Brandon and Jeanette do a hip-hop and rock fusion number. Brandon’s hip-hop skills surprised and impressed me and I enjoyed it.

Kupono and Karla get the Viannese Waltz. Finally, I see what the judges see in her.

Randi and Evan – My favorite performance of the night. Everything from the opening in one shoe, the slow back bend going around, the booty pops and head bobs. I love Randi and Evan! Mia Michaels hooked this number up! And this song is my first iTunes download of the season.

Caitlin and Jason do a Paso Doble that left me feeling … meh. No suitable video found, well this…

Phillip and Jeanine get a Tyce Diorio Broadway routine. I looove Broadway! I do not love this performance from Phillip.

So You Think You Can Dance Week 2

I have to say that I am not surprised with Tony and Paris getting eliminated last week. Though, I’m sad to see Tony go. He was my hope for that one dancer every season that breaks out of their niche and surprises everyone. Oh well. On to week 2!

First, Randi and Evan get Jive. I really like this couple. They’re both spark plug built, fire hydrant shaped, little bitty things. Plus, he reminds me of George (T.R. Knight) on Grey’s Anatomy. I enjoyed their dance. The judges were not THAT impressed. I couldn’t tell a jive from a hand jive from a hand job so….

Ade and Melissa – Again, a couple I really like. They get contemporary with Sonja. I don’t “get” it completely, but I like it. I want the naughty ballerina to do well.

At this point, I’d like to point out that I don’t think even Lil C knows what the hell he’s talking about.

Jason and Caitlin – They get hip hop with Shane Sparks (one of my favorite choreographers.) It is the epitome of a hot ass mess. She sucks. All she did was walk around rub herself. He wasn’t that bad, but her suckiness made it hard to concentrate on him. In fact, the whole thing was hard to watch.

Jeanette and Brandon – I don’t normally like disco dancing, though I LOVE the music. This routine was insane. I respect the sheer athleticism involved in what these two did. Nice recovery at the end when she almost bust her ass, though.

Asuka and Vitolio – They get the waltz. And I loved watching it. Apparently he wasn’t as technically correct as he could have been, but the judges loved it too.

Max and Kayla – They get pop/jazz with Brian Friedman (happy to see him back this season!)  Can I just say, I don’t get the big fuss they’re making over Kayla. Do you?

Jonathan and Karla – I loved this contemporary piece and I loved the song. Can anyone tell me what movie this is from?

Phillip and Janine – I love the tango. I did not love these two doing the tango. I feel like I got screwed. I did enjoy Lil C getting called out for not knowing what the hell he was talking about.

Kupono and Ashley – Another Shane Sparks opportunity ruined! Ugh. I liked the song. I liked the choreography, and I KINDA liked the performance… but it could have been so much better. I don’t think she did as great as the judges said and I don’t think he did as poorly as they thought he did. In fact, I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. There’s a great moment when she gets on her back, extends her arm, and then flexes her fingers not to the music but to the vocals. I love little details like that. I love Shane Sparks.

I don’t think they’re going home though.

So You Think You Can Dance – Week 1.0

It’s the first night of week one and after auditions held all over the country, the top 10 girls and top 10 guys are paired for competition. First up?

1. Jeanine and Phillip perform a hip-hop number choreographed by Tabitha and Napoleon. I didn’t like it. I like my hip-hop hard and dirty and their numbers seem to incorporate a lot of popping and body-rolling that just comes off soft. The judges (Adam Shankman, Mary Murphy, and Nigel Hawthorne) love it.

2. Asuka and Vitolio - I’m rooting for them because they both seem nice. They get Tyce Diorio and  Broadway. I adore Broadway! And they get Hot Honey Rag from Chicago! My favorite musical.  Unfortunately, the performance didn’t do it for me. And it’s not their fault. The choreography was too slow for the music. The judges didn’t seem to be feeling it either. Vitolio was sweatin’ like a runaway slave.

3. Karla and Jonathan – I really like them both. She’s sexy and he’s cute. They get the Cha-Cha and tear it up. I loved it. I didn’t love the strobe lights at the beginning of the number because they damn-near gave me a migraine, but everything else was hot.

4. Randi and Evan – So far, my favorite performance of the night. They get Tyce again and perform a sexy jazz routine to James Callum’s, “I Only Have Eyes For You.” It’s beautiful. I usually don’t like body types like Randi’s, but she looked great.

5. Paris and Tony – They get Tabitha and Napoleon for more hip-hop. I like this one slightly more than I liked the first hip-hop performance. The judges are kinda meh about it as well. They’ll gonna get lots of votes though because Tony is cute.

6. Caitlin and Jason – He reminds me of Mark Consuelos. She reminds me of someone too, but I can’t place it right now. They get a Bollywood number and perform to Jai Ho. I love that song from the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack. I really loved the performance, but I thought Jason did MUCH better than Caitlin. I couldn’t keep my eyes off of him.

7. Janette and Brandon – They perform a beautiful foxtrot choreographed by one of the professionals from Dancing w/ the Stars (Louis Von something.) Janette has no formal training and is a salsa dancer from Miami. You totally couldn’t tell watching this performance. I can’t wait to see what happens when Brandon gets teamed up with Mia Michaels and her hatin’ ass. You know it’s gonna happen.

8. Ashley and Kupono are lucky as hell because they got Wade Robson and he’s one of my favorite choreographers on the show. It’s a jazz routine about a brand new crash test dummy (Ashley) fascinated by an old rebuilt crash test dummy (Kupono.) It’s quirky and weird and totally Wade. I loved it!

9. Melissa and Ade – She’s the oldest person in the competition this year at 29. I really like the two of them and their performance of a Mandy Moore contemporary piece. I don’t always “get” contemporary, but I got and loved this one. They were so in sync and beautiful. I hope they get lots of votes.

10. Kayla and Max – Tear it up doing a spicy Samba. You just have to look at it.
