Mommy Monday: Facebook Fiend

It was bound to happen. Just a few short weeks after getting Kali a laptop for Christmas, she now has a Facebook account.

Thanks to Windows 7, we’ve been able to closely monitor not just her internet use, but everything she does while on the computer. So, she won’t be tempted to stay up late doing God knows what while we sleep, we have a timer set so that the laptop shuts off at 9pm on school nights and 11pm on the weekends. Only games of a certain ESRB rating are allowed to be played/installed and as the administrator I watch her browser history with Dick Cheney-like hawkishness.

(She’s also kinda under the impression that every night her laptop emails my laptop a complete video of everything she did on the computer that day.)

The fact that she has since joined the Facebook fray is totally my fault. It all began when I would ask her to log in to my Farmville and Petville accounts to harvest my crops and clean my apartment. What?! It’s not my fault Zynga has yet to install the upgrade where you can peruse the local Home Depot for Mexican day workers!

I'm pretty sure it's not child labor if it's virtual.

Like all oppressed, she started grumbling about reaping the benefits for herself. Why can’t I have my own farm with neighbors and stuff? Why, indeed.

So, I let her have an account under the rules that I will accept all of her friend requests, read her emails, and get first crack at her golden eggs when she posts them. Don’t judge me.

I made my status updates invisible to her and only sent out friend requests to family and friends that didn’t post questionable content. Of course, it has recently come to my attention that one family member in particular got super offended when  they were excluded from Kali’s friends list and I’ve since been defriended. Ain’t the first time, won’t be the last.

But that’s the beauty of being the boss of your own kids. You get to make the calls, rules, and decisions. They may not always be popular with others, but my motto is, “They’ll be aight.”

I’m afraid, though, that I’ve created quite the Facebook monster. Kali is kinda obsessed with two features: quizzes and Facebook chat. The latter has gotten out of control. She can be sitting across the room when suddenly:

Sometimes, it comes in handy:

And my child has never met a quiz she didn’t like.

What kind of Miley Cyrus song are you?

Who are you more like: Miley Cyrus or Selena Gomez?

Is your name nerdy?

But my favorite:

Needless to say, I can’t stop calling her Butter Nuts.

Are you aware you are bookmarked in my BlackBerry? The site converts really well! Oh and Noah wanted a facebook page. I told him he had to get a job first. Those were the rules. He didn't buy it. But I have postponed it at least for now.

How do you manage to prevent her from visiting this blog?

She only looks if she happens to be on my laptop and it happens to be up. And then she just read two or three of the Mommy Monday ones about her. Now that she has her own computer, she's all about Facebook to talk to her school friends, playing the Sims 3, and Facebook apps.

i replaced Dei's big 17in laptop with a netbook thinking she would use it...i sent the laptop to her GodFather in Denver. Yeah, she hasnt used it since it came in the mail...she is already over the Zynga stuff because it was too much to keep up with. I told her to friend Kali but she hasnt been online in at least 3 weeks. I intentionally didnt friend ButterNuts because i know im out of line with most of my status' aahaha

I use the parental controls on the teenagers ahahahahaha

I remember being on AOL at my friends house and all the pervs trying to get you to meet them somewhere. Still makes my skin crawl.

"She’s also kinda under the impression that every night her laptop emails my laptop a complete video of everything she did on the computer that day.)"

Bwa ha ha ha ha!!

TH believed the same thing.

Funny that you mention this, because recently my sister purchased a netbook for my 10-year-old nephew(which I extremely disapproved of). Soon after, he asked her if could have a Facebook account because all of his friends do as well. I'm so bewildered by this because I remember being 10 years old and even though I played video games very often, I would never ask my parents to buy me a laptop or have an account on a social networking site. It's all so weird because I am only 19 and I feel like the youth in America today has morals, values, and beliefs that are extremely different from my generation even though we're only a decade away.

I think the fact that you monitor your daughter's every move on her computer is very smart and almost vital in a world we live in today. I'm a bit worried about my nephew though because his parents are not as strict and protective over his computer usage. He often browses sites like YouTube for videos of cartoons and video games, but I am very worried because God knows how many inappropriate comments people make on videos. He is way too young to have to be exposed to the massive amounts of stupidity, racism, and homophobia that decorates the comment section of videos.

I had to nip YouTube in the bud. Quickly. Now, if she wants to see videos, I search and approve them.

YouTube has been an issue with the 11 year old. He is at that age when he looks to see where the line is.

Shelby just turned 14 so I let her have a facebook. THEN I got suckered when I did the same as you and asked Tru to feed my pet in Petville.
I finally let both if the boys have accounts just for games and family contacts.

I made a friends list called kiddos. They see only my photos and my information. (I am not exactly kid friendly to my kids or anyone else's on facebook)
Tru is hilarious. He posts random comments all the time. My favorite was when one of my cousins asked a question about her love life in her status, I replied. "gee, babe I am not sure, either way someone will get hurt"
Truman replies 3 DAYS later, " 42 the answer is always 42" I died laughing. He has also outed me to a cousin with an ugly baby. " Is that the baby mom said looked like a baboons butt? I do not think she is that ugly"

James has no desire to talk to anyone. He gets offended if anyone talks to him. He plays his games and logs off.

Oh and all 3 kids are convinced that the Nick's slimed edition laptops come preinstalled with parental filters that email me every day at 2pm with a complete list of all activities and keystrokes.

LOL! I think its the age. Our 13 almost 14 yr old daughter takes 50 quizzes per facebook session on avaerage. I finally told her, you know you can take those quizes without publishing them or inviting everyone else to take them right? now we only see one or two a day..

my oldest has a facebook. he showed me a pic of a girl he likes, i c&p to my sister to show her and he found out about it. now he thinks im a total stalker mom.

when i first let him have his own page, i wouldnt let him put his pic up cuz i was scared. ive relaxed a bit now since he is 14. lol i protect him like u do kali. thats what good mommies do!

My little cousin Bethy is the same age as Kali. Her Mum emailed us all and asked that if we add her, can we block our statuses from her. That way noone was offended. I have also blocked any tagged pics from her and her from seeing posts from my friends, all in all she cant see much, but what I allow her to. It seems to work, and keeps her happy and not feeling left out.

My sons grew up using MSN chat. Unknown to them I had a copy of every typed chat sent to a folder deep within my computer. I knew what they were doing and they were caught a several things they shouldn't have been doing. To this day they don't know.
I can tell you that most of the parents of the other kids had no idea what their kids were up to. Heads in the sand. Oh he's too busy in sports, he doesn't have an interest in smoking pot. Oh she would never drink, she doesn't like the taste. Morons.

& I love her picture. I should scan and pst the one where she is dressed like Raggedy Ann standing next to Shadow. She is a little obsessed with the quizes, I stopped reading all of her posted quiz results. I don't have enough hours to keep up with her. lol

I know. It keeps her out of trouble so I deal with it. LOL

I have to file this one away for future reference when Alanna and Zoe come of (computer) age. If only to remember to convince them "that every night her laptop emails my laptop a complete video of everything she did on the computer that day"

And ...

good. you're not busy. bring me a coke. <--- I think I may still be chuckling over that one at random times over the course of the next few days.

I like how she has a retro pic..LOL!

Yes. That pic is all of 8 years old! LMAO
