The L Word: Loyalty

Creepy, dark, eerie, and did I mention creepy? That’s what the opening scene of the Season 6 premiere was. The mist on the police cruisers, the lights, the sirens – it was all too much for me. It reminded me of the kind of thriller movie I try my best to avoid. Then I remembered that death isn’t pretty, as the paramedics rolled Jenny’s body through Bette’s living room. They found her body in the pool. *shudder*

Maybe it is pretty...

Maybe it is pretty...

Although the movie-like intro had me expecting Morgan Freeman to step on the scene, the detective on the case was Lucy Lawless, (that’s right, Xena and for you BSG fans, D’Anna aka Number 3). As Sergeant Mary Beth Duffy, she had some questions for the seven women in the room: Bette, Tina, Shane, Kit, Helena, Alice, and Max. Did anyone else find it strange that the officer who debriefed the sergeant referred to Max as a woman?

They flashback to the Lez Girls wrap party, three months earlier, where all is calm and thankfully bright. Now here’s the show I know and love! We pick up where we left off with Jenny telling either Shane or Niki that she has broken her heart. We are also reminded that the movie executives want to change the movie and give it the old Hollywood Hetero ending it “deserves.” Emotions are running high; Tina is upset over the turn of events in the movie, Bette is defending Shane and her betrayal of Jenny, and Alice and Tasha are on the verge of breaking up.

Don't do it!

Don't do it!

Jenny is rightfully pissed off at Shane and Niki and raking them over the coals. And Shane is begging for forgiveness and getting nowhere. After Jenny kicks her and her “skanky” clothes out of the house, Shane tries to crash with Bette and Tina who have a feverish Angelica on their hands. Because they were too busy and too judgy (Tina) to deal with her, Shane goes to Alice’s. Bad timing; she and Tasha are in the middle of a huge fight. Alice comes clean about her friendship with the fashion designer she met last season. She explains to Tasha that Clea Mason (Melanie Lynskey) was easy to talk to, that they had a lot in common, BUT she didn’t cheat. To Tasha, things are black and white, thinking is cheating, and she is out! Alice’s best line, “I mean, I didn’t even really kiss her, at all.” What? That’s like being a little pregnant. Either ya kissed, or ya didn’t!

Poor Shane was all alone with nowhere to go. Took me back to Season 1 when she was staying out all night, hooking up with random girls, being a dick, but at least there was remorse this time. Shane finally goes to The Hit Club (Helena and Kit‘s new club), gets loaded and then proceeds to get really great advice from Kit. Don’t let Jenny go without a fight. Fight to the death for your friendship.

Fighting to the Death!

Fighting to the Death!

We also learn that Shane is in love with Molly and the hurt over their breakup and the fact that Jenny and Niki were on a break is what led her to hook up. Shane was promising all kinds of stuff in return for Jenny’s forgiveness. “I’ll be your slave, your assistant.” What she should have offered was free hair services for life! Jenny wasn’t buying it, and later told Molly that Shane and Niki were together and had been for months. Does she really believe that or was that her way of making things worse for Shane and Molly? Why hide the jacket and Molly’s letter to Shane in the attic — why not burn the letter and throw jacket out on lawn with the rest of Shane’s stuff? It’ll be interesting to see if Jenny forgave Shane before she died. Jenny tricks Niki into one last romp, then curses and kicks her out. We learn then that it was in fact Shane who had broken her heart. Awwwh…

"You've broken my heart."

"You've broken my heart."

The next day at The Planet, were battle lines drawn or what? The division of the friends was very telling. Shane, Alice, and Bette – the cheaters. Jenny, Tasha, and Tina – the cheatees. So are you Team Shane or Team Jenny?

Also, wasn’t it great to see Papi again?

The L Word airs at 9p.m. Sunday nights on Showtime.

i don't want to ruin it for anyone, but last week, perez hilton did a MAJOR spoiler and by giving away the details of the upcoming L-Word spinoff, pretty much revealed who killed Jenny. if anyone wants to know, it's buried in there somewhere.

also, i think sophie is right - i think jenny was going to say she's in love with shane, and i think that they're supposed to get together this season before jenny dies. i don't remember where i heard it, but there was some speculation that it was supposed to happen.

as a real lesbian, i'd have to say that i'd want to be with someone like alice. but i wouldn't turn someone who looks like shane or helena or bette out of my bed.

You forgot MARINA. Seriously..........

Was Marina the one that turned Jenny out in the first season when she was engaged to the guy from Ugly Betty?

Yes, that was Marina.

If anyone deserves a spinoff, it should be Alice. I will watch anyway, but I would definitely watch if it were called I Love Tasha or Alice and Tasha Are Still Together!

oh marina. i'd let her break my heart a few times, for sure. do you remember her from Legends of the Fall with brad pitt, aiden quinn, and that kid from ET (grown up, as the youngest of the 3 brothers)? i miss marina's character, i'd love it if she came back for an episode or 2 in the final season.

I read that spoiler on Perez! I'm so annoyed its ruined, but i will still watch it for sure!

I usually avoid spoilers like the plague. I won’t even read soap opera magazines. Actually, I’m just so thrilled about this season I don’t even care that I know.

I've never seen Noah's Arc, but I've heard of it. How about Queer As Folk? Is that any good? I've never seen that either. When my Netflix is up and running again, maybe I'll throw that in my queue.

WOW I MISSED IT WAS TOO TIRED BUT THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE I WILL TRY AND CATCH IT NEXT WEEK, I JUST LOVE THIS SHOW NOW IF WE CAN ALL GET OUR "OTHER" SHOW BACK ON .....NOHAS ARK!!!!!! WE WILL HAVE MUCH TO TALK ABOUT.

Woman, I can NOT believe you tried to use OTH as a way of luring me in! That's... that's just low!

It probably worked! I bet all seasons are in your queue right now. Desperate times, my friend, desperate times...

Thanks for reviewing this, it's one of my favourite shows! I'm glad they started the show (after the opening scene) by going back to remind those like me who'd forgotten where we left off!

Me too. I always intend to watch the season finale before the next season premiere but always forget. It's like the new seasons sneak up on me and I never have enough time.

I do want to go back and watch the finale again to see where Jenny and Shane left off before Shane hooked up with Niki. Might explain some things...

When it comes to this show, I'm like a good nun and penis: Never seen it, never will. But I will admit to a certain fascination with reading about it. If they would just throw me some hot guys on occasion, I might consider it... meanwhile, do you think they hired Melanie Lynskey THINKING they were getting Monica Lewinsky (and the accompanying free press), and then, upon realizing their error, were like, "Shhhiiiiiiiit."

You have no idea what you're missing. It's such a great show. If you like One Tree Hill, you'll love The L Word. Okay, maybe that's a stretch. Actually it's more like apples and oranges, but it really is a good show.

I like Bette she is my favorite. I sure hope Jenny is not in love with Shane. Shane deserves to be alone. She would be my least favorite on the show. I hope Jodi comes back because Bette with Tina is just boring. I also hope that Tasha gets a new love interest, maybe Papi? I think this season will not be as good as previous ones.

I heard that Jenny and Shane get together, as in a couple, and then she dies...I was glad to see Papi but we didnt get an explanation as to where she has been...
If I were a lesbian I would go for Tasha or Shane, or Me'shell N'degocello (i know she isnt on the show...but she could whisper in my ear any day )

When Jenny told Shane that she had broken her heart, I thought she meant as a best friend. But then after she blew off Niki, it started to make sense that she might have romantic feelings for Shane. When Kit told Shane that she lets her girls go too easily and Shane blew it off and said, "No, Jenny and I are just friends," I thought maybe it really is possible.

Remember at the wrap party, Jenny wanted to announce that she was in love. I just assumed she meant with Niki, but what if she wanted to talk to Niki privately before announcing to the world that she was in love with Shane. Hmmm?

I would want someone like Alice, but my self-destructive ways would lead me to another Shane.

Leave that opening sequence alone. It's fast paced and the song is catchy. We can't all have a timestamp as our opening sequence.

It's really cheesy.

If I were a lesbian, I'd love Alice.

I'm actually watching this now.

I started season one when I first got pregnant. I only got through four episodes before the true morning sickness kicked, and I lost interest in anything not a bucket.

That said, I remember the opening sequence being less... lame. It's like a really bad tampon commercial.
