I was just thinking how nothing lasts. And what a shame that is.” – Benjamin Button

Benjamin Button (Brad Pitt) was born in New Orleans on the day World War I ended. He was born with severe arthritis and sagging skin. Benjamin was a baby that looked like an old man. Abandoned at a nursing home by his repulsed father, after his mother died in childbirth, Benjamin is raised by a caring, black, nurse that believes he is a gift from God.

As a child growing up in a house full of elderly people, Benjamin fit right in. And though he looks like them, he gets younger as they die and are replaced by other ailing seniors. He learns many life lessons from his housemates, but still needs to experience the world for himself, and so at the age of 18, but looking like a man closer to 60, Benjamin sets off on his own.

What follows is a story very much like Forrest Gump; we view the world through his unique perspective as he spends decades experiencing love, friendship, and loss. Cate Blanchett plays Daisy, the woman Benjamin has loved since they were both children. As he gets younger, and she older, they meet and build a life together somewhere in the middle. The movie is told through flashbacks as an ailing Daisy lies in a nursing home in New Orleans and Hurricane Katrina bears down.

Brad Pitt commands the screen with all the charm and sex appeal of a young Robert Redford, and though Cate Blanchett may receive an Oscar nod for her supporting role, Tilda Swinton gives an emotional and layered performance as a married woman Benjamin has an affair with as he’s out discovering the world.

The movie looks amazing; particularly the costumes from different eras and the special effects as most characters age and Benjamin does the opposite are impressive. It’s a long film at almost three hours long and it’s sad. I cried like a teething child at the end. I suspect Donny cried too. The lessons of Benjamin Button lie in how we choose to measure our lives and what we leave behind when we’re gone.

Cate Blanchett with a southern accent FTW; but Benjamin Button kept dragging on, always pausing dramatically on Brad Pitt's face, a lot like Meet Joe Black, FTL

Some friends of mine worked on this and told me a year ago about it. I haven't seen it yet. But I do know they were proud to work on it. When they do this, it is usually good.

If it reminded you of Forest Gump, we'll have to see it! Dave's all-time favorite movie is Forest Gump.

Now, if I can just get a sitter and get away for a long movie...

Great review, by the way. I love your new site. It rocks.

I was thinking the other day while watching the previews that Brad Pitt really reminds me of Robert Redford.

I really want to see this, but I hate crying at movies. I feel like such a wimp.

Sad and beautiful.
Your review nailed it.

I am watching Slum Dog Millionaire and Changeling tonight (well, this morning)...is winter break really over? wahhhhhhhhh

I'm watching SM either tonight or tomorrow. I really want to see Changeling.

I can't wait to see this! but that first picture is gonna freak me out tonight as I try and go to sleep!

I'll admit the end got to me to (no crying though). It was just so sad watchin him...get younger. But mostly it just depressed me with all that thinking about death and how short life actually is.

Look, I have to say this isn't your best. I know you can bring your best, so why didn't you here? I love you, I adore you, I've followed through past myspace to read you, but this reads placid. "Just sayin'" (Please don't hate me, I'm just saying it as it is! (for me)}

Meanwhile, I SO need to see this movie. It's on my to-do-list.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. What would you have liked to have seen here?

I tried to give my opinion of the film w/o ruining it for those that haven't seen it.

Well, I haven't seen the film in regards to spoilers, so I can't reply in that regard. The review felt cold; statistical even. You usually write in a style that conveys your presence, and I didn't feel that here. . You're 'just a reporter' and I missed the 'Nina wrote this' vibe.

And again, please don't think that I don't love you, I really do (well, you know in a blogging way, not like a stalker--I man, you're a GIRL, first thing, and besides that there's the gay thing.)

This is a powerful film. I really enjoyed the storytelling in it. Reminded me how awesome a wordsmith F. Scott Fitzgerald is, and the movie, though rife with notable differences, captured very much the spirit of the work.

Kinda like Forest Gump meets Big Fish, personally.

Cheers,

Nice comparison!

As much as I adored the movie, I have to put some distance between myself and it before watching it again. The ending tore me up quite nicely.

Yeah it's a tear jerker for sure.
Definitely gonna watch it again.
I loved the feeling that the line you quoted above haunted their romance from the start.

Very gothic romance meets allegory personally.

Cheers,

Whats with all the sad ending movies lately. Why can't Clinton Eastwood kill everyone at the end...:)

Seven Pounds....Clint Eastwood shows up at the end..better ending.

Marley and Me....Clint Eastwood shows up at the end..Old Yeller style!

Benjamin Buttons...Clint Eastwood shows up at the beginning...as a "doctor"

I'm watching Eagle Eye for a DVD review I'm doing. I have a feeling this won't have a sad ending.

I really liked the movie too. I thought the whole cast was great. Do you think it deserves best picture of the year though? A lot of people in the know seem to think it will win. I'm not so sure I would call it the best picture of the year. I saw Doubt recently too, and I'm pretty sure I liked that one better. The Dark Knight I thought was a better movie too.
And I am soo pyched to see Revolutionary Road.
(and side note since this is my first comment on the site, BSG 4.0 is coming on dvd this week!!)

I don't know if it will win, or if it even should, but I can tell you that of all the movies with "buzz" it's the most like past winners, you know?

I thought Gran Torino was pretty damn good, and I wouldn't mind seeing that win. The Dark Knight won't, but damn I hope Heath gets a nom and a win.

I'm gonna see Revolutionary Road soon. And I want to see Doubt.

I saw that BSG 4.0 comes out soon. I wasn't sure it would be released before 4.5 aired. Now you can get all caught up!

I haven't seen it yet although I had the opportunity to screen it. I ended up screening "The Spirit" instead. Man, that was one of my worst choices of 2008!

Thanks for the review! I'll have to check it out...

-Dallas-

P.S.

(If you haven't seen "Doubt" do so immediately!)

Yeah, The Spirit didn't look like it would be any good. And I loved Sin City.

I'll see if my connection can get me Doubt. It looks really good.

Dallas, check out Gran Torino when you can.

It took me a couple takes during the holidays before I realized The Spirit wasn't some lame Hallmark card commercial.

BTW that is one ugly mother fuckin' baby..hes no Jack thats for sure.

You know those cell phone commercials made to look like movie trailers? That's what The Spirit trailers were like.

I saw it last night and thought it was great. My favorite was the old guy that got struck by lightening 7 times that was hilarous.

I notice on myspace that you are on season 3 of the wire. My gf and I started at season 1 and have now made it to 3. I love that show so much and since I live so close to Baltimore its extra special. Although I still hate on Bodymore, Muddaland.

Yes, the guy getting struck by lightning was very funny. I loved the little clips of it happening.

We just watched the season three finale. I was a little disappointed. After you watch it, hit me up and I'll tell you why. It's still an awesome show though.

We'll be starting season 4 this week.

I have been on the fence about Benjamin Button, I want to see it, but I just can't part with the 12 dollars to go to a movie anymore. I don't even want to shell out 7-9 dollars for a freaking matinee.
I do like Cate and Tilda. I dunno. I have to see how the money is flowing this month.

A friend of mine refers to Taraji P Henson as "that wide mouth girl" so its hard for me to take her seriously at times. But she is a damn good crier.

You definitely get your money's worth length wise 'cause the movie is long as hell. But it's really good. If money is tight, wait till DVD. It will still be as good.

I really liked Taraji in this. Hopefully, such a big movie will get her more work. She had some good stuff and it was really weird watching her play his Momma. It was his head digitally put on the little body when he was a "kid" and when he's older and all fine and stuff... yeah, it was really weird watching this black girl play his mother.

My sister and I went to see this yesterday. It was SOOOOO good. It really did remind me of Forest Gump.

We loved it. Did you cry at the end? I was a mess.

Of course! I cry at everything these days! Lol! Even Hallmark and Allstate commercials. It's sad. I've noticed it has gotten worse over the years....

God I'm tglad I'm not the only one who's like that.
